ELT Online Teachers’ Professional Development During the Covid-19 Pandemic Outbreak: Perceptions, Implications and Adaptations

As lockdown restrictions were implemented in most countries around the world with subsequent transition to full-mode online teaching and learning, English language teachers (ELTs) particular, had adapt adopt new strategies. These unexpected changes medium or mode of necessitated provision efficacious coherent professional development (PD) training order smoothly navigate from full-time (or semi full-time) onsite learning teaching. This research study, based on sequential explanatory mixed-methods design, is aimed at exploring availability ELT PD opportunities Language Institutes (ELIs)/English Centers (ELCs), five major universities Saudi Arabia perception its coherence adequacy. A total 307 as a Foreign (EFL) male female participated custom designed 20-item questionnaire 5-point Likert scale, well ten EFL (6 4 male) taking part 40-minute semi-structured interviews, explore their opinions opportunities. Analysis results gathered data indicated that majority felt there adequate while structures these sufficiently addressed needs. However, some voiced concerns regarding correlation between contextual, sessions provided. Implications recommendations for stake holders future are given end this study.
